Child and Parent Learning Experience (CAPLE)

Objectives

  • To help K1 students who are lagging behind their peers academically and to prepare academically
    weaker K2 students for Primary 1 with emphasis on phonics and numeracy concepts
  • To promote and teach parental involvement in their children's studies

Venue
Block 81, MacPherson Lane, #01-29, S360081

Duration
20 weeks,2 1/2hours per week

Schedule
Saturday, 2pm to 430pm, from May to November

Core Content / methodology

  • Lessons in Phonics covering A to Z through stories, music and writing
  • Mathematical concepts through games, rhymes and hands-on activities
  • Learning Experience Approach through field trips, discussions, reading and writing
  • Parents are also taught the same but with additional focus on simple methodology of teaching basic mathematical concepts and parenting tips for a conducive learning environment to motivate,encourage their children
  • Individual coaching where needed
  • Group teaching
  • Small group work

Eligibility criteria for admission to program

  • Children identified by their teachers as lagging behind in their cobort or not equipped for
    Primary One
  • Children who are struggling to recognize letters of the alphabet and words in the English language
  • Under financial assistance scheme
  • Singapore citizens

Minimum Qualification required of volunteers

  • Able to speak in English clearly (Good pronunciation is a plus)
  • A credit for English Language at GCE '0' level

Training for volunteers

  • Orientation
  • Phonics & Numeracy
  • Worksheet Activities
  • Other workshops as appropriate

BCCS Expectations of volunteers

  • Attendance at training
  • Commitment for full 20 weeks
  • Participate Mat least one bonding activity outside of the program

KidsAglow

Objectives

  • To enhance the mental development of young children in low income families by instilling in them a love for reading, for learning through stories, arts & crafts, games, exploration and creative projects
  • To foster family bonding and build quality relationships

Venue

Duration
25 sessions, 2 1/2 hours per session

Schedule
Saturday 2pm -4.30pm from February to November

Tuition Service

Objective
To provide academic assistance to past beneficiaries of BCCS' preparatory programs for primary school, their siblings and other academically weak children from low income families so that they can catch up/ keep pace with peers, pass exams or even to excel academically

Venue

Duration
2 hours per session weekly

Schedule
Every Saturday, loam to 12pm as per school term

Core Content / Methodology

  • Coaching in English, Mathematics and Science subjects for Primary one to Secondary four students
  • Student to teacher ratio target: not >2:1

Eligibility criteria for admission to program

  • Children who have participated in our past programs
  • Children from homes under financial assistance scheme
  • Singapore citizen

Minimum Qualification required of volunteers
An '0' level pass in the subjects offered for tuition.

KidsZone

Objectives

  • To provide a safe and stimulating environment for latchkey kids from MacPherson Primary School to pass their time after school in meaningful ways with emphasis on character building and
  • To provide family support services to troubled students and their parents.

Venue opens daily for slightly >3 hours

Schedule
1.45pm -5pm, on school days

  • Indoor and outdoor games and activities with a coach/supervisor
  • Competitions
  • Help with schoolwork
  • Reading club (weekly on Thursdays, 2pm-4pm)
  • Befriending by volunteers& Peer Support Group
  • 'Dads For Life' parent-child bonding programs
  • Family support services

Eligibility criteria for admission to program

  • All students of MacPherson Primary School (daily sign-in)
  • Referrals from principal for family support services

Minimum Qualification required of volunteers
None (see below for personality traits& skills preferred)

Training for volunteers

  • Orientation
  • Informal  training as needed

BCCS' Expectations of volunteers

  • Friendly, sociable and caring; or
  • Willing to mentor; or
  • Has expertise to teach a game/coach in a sport
  • Willing to commit 2 hours a week on week days in the afternoons
  • For Reading Club, ability to read, speak and communicate clearly in English

FamilyZone

Objective
To bring hope and cheer to needy families especially the elderly members in Braddell Heights Zone B through offer of assistance upon identification of areas of needs

Lunch pack distribution:About 1 1/2 hours

Schedule

  • Lunch pack distribution: Every 2nd & 4th / 5th Saturdays of each month between 11.30am-12.45pm
  • Home visitation : Tues or Wed, weekly
  • Outings :Bi-monthly

Core Content

  • Lunch pack distribution* to needy families identified by Braddell Heights Zone B RC (*Includes casual chit chat sessions if invited into homes)
  • Home visitation to needy families to follow up on issues (if any) on their health conditions and to provide general assistance in personal and household matters
  • Free dental checks and follow-up dental services at dental clinic for the elderly
  • Outings for willing participants to get them out of their homes for a healthy change of environment and for mental stimulation

Eligibility criteria for admission to program
Families identified as needy by Braddell Heights Zone B Residents Committee (RC) through Southeast CDC

Minimum Qualification required of volunteers

  • Able to understand and converse in dialects such as simple Hokkien, Teochew or Cantonese and Mandarin; and/or
  • Trained in dentistry, physiotherapy or elder care

Training for volunteers

  • Orientation
  • On the job for befrienders through the lunch packs distribution or other interactive activities

BCCS' Expectations of volunteers

  • For befrienders, patience and a caring heart
  • Able to commit about 2 hours per session, twice monthly

HOPE Program

Objective

To reach out to families struggling with multiple challenges including financial, relational and academic problems and help them break out of trapped situations by providing training, mentoring and counselling support services

Families who have a combined household income of $1,900 and below or a per capita income of $650 and below

  •  Counselling & Guidance: Recognized professional qualifications in counselling or social work
  • Tuition: An ‘O’ level pass in the subjects offered for tuition
  • General: See below for personality traits and skills preferred.

  • Orientation

BCCS' Expectations of volunteers

  • Life Skills Training: Has expertise/experience in conducting workshops for parents
  • Child Befriending: Young Adults committed to serving on a monthly basis for a minimum of 6 months, and enjoys working with children
  • General: Good interpersonal communication skills, caring and patient yet firm
